Mudrooms. Functional AND Beautiful!

Mudrooms are commonplace in many homes as they provide that buffer between the outside elements and the cozy clean interior.  These entrance areas are where people wipe their shoes, hang their coats and store their winter gear, books, and backpacks.  They are usually built for function rather than fashion.  However, the following mudrooms go way beyond pure function and are so beautiful they could be used as the main entrance to greet guests. 

The exquisite detailing and choice of materials makes this mudroom a standout!  The cushioned benches add an element of comfort that's often missing in more functionally designed spaces.

Lighting is key, but this lantern goes way beyond the task of mere illumination and provides a charming ambience to the space.

One of a mudrooms main functions is storage and the ability to control clutter.  I love the individualized "lockers", each with their own shelf, hooks and drawer.  And, once again, the chandeliers add that bit of charm and character that is often lacking in a utilitarian and functional space.

I love the big basket for large items such as the lacrosse sticks (we have plenty of those).  The all-white color scheme is gorgeous and airy, but maybe a bit unpractical.

Mudrooms often do double duty as laundry rooms.  This room combines the tasks beautifully with a soothing color palette.

Slate flooring is a great choice due to its' durability, ease of care and ability to hide dirt and debris.  The glass paned door lets in natural light. The curved wood detailing on the beadboard woodwork, along with the painted lantern, give this mudroom plenty of charisma.

Wow!  With a mudroom like this I might never make it into the rest of the house.  The stunning flooring, along with the bench, adds warmth, pattern and friendliness.  In my opinion, every room needs a touch of black.  The row of black hooks, combined with the black countertop, add sophistication and depth.  Together it makes a striking composition.

Rather than use built-in storage, this mudroom takes advantage of an antique bench.  Possibly a vintage church pew?  Hooks and family photos hang overhead as the perfect companion.
