The Kitchen Backsplash.

A kitchen backsplash, in addition to serving a practical purpose, can be a vital design element.  It can add subtle interest and texture or be the main attraction.  Here are some stunning backsplashes in a variety of materials to hopefully fuel your inspiration.

Why go ordinary?  This bold chevron striped tile makes a tremendous difference in this kitchen's style.  The eye-catching pattern adds pizzazz, movement and energy.  And, who wants to be put to sleep in an area of the home where so much action happens?

Subtle, yet shimmery, bold stainless steel backsplashes make a perfect backdrop.  The reflective surface changes with the amount and direction of light. This cutting-edge material combined with the diamond pattern gives the kitchen a up-to-date industrial feel.

Take a risk when choosing a backsplash color.  These navy tiles make a statement and help create a space that is fun and graphic.  The white dishware, hood and cabinetry pop against the dark background.  I love the arts and crafts feel of the patterned floor and light fixtures.

This backsplash is vibrant and fun.  It helps create a casual lively atmosphere.  In contrast, the cabinets are kept plain and simple.

Bring a touch of glamour to your kitchen with a glitzy tiled backsplash.  This backsplash definitely heightens the drama!  Maybe a bit too theatrical?  It wouldn't be my first choice (or second!), but it definitely creates a ritzy feel.

Have you ever heard of a style referred to as "yacht chic"?  This would be it!  All of the elements contribute to the nautical feel, including the incredible faux wood flooring.  A beadboard backsplash fits in seamlessly.

A beadboard backsplash is a less costly alternative to a tiled backsplash.  It allows you to create a classic look without compromising on style.

A cheery checkerboard patterned backsplash adds charm to this country chic kitchen.  I love the rustic brick floor; however, I imagine it would be uncomfortable to stand on for long periods of time.  The eclectic mismatched cabinetry adds to the casual feel of the space.  I envision apple pie and bread being baked here!

I can't leave out my all-time favorite... white ceramic subway tiles.  They're a durable, classic and versatile choice that never goes out of style.  They're consistent with the monochromatic palette of this kitchen.

The small clear glass tiles in this backsplash make the perfect backdrop for the stainless steel double stack hood and stainless steel appliances.
